In January of 1966, Gary Severson joined with Albert Putnam to form the law firm of Putnam & Severson located in the Putnam Arcade on the second floor.
In May of 1966, Albert Putnam passed away and Linwood Hand joined the firm. It was renamed Putnam, Severson & Hand. Gary and Linwood were then joined by James Briggs, serving since that time as the firm’s real estate title abstractor. Shortly thereafter, Gary and Lynwood purchased 35 Market Square and relocated the practice to that location.
Gary Severson and Linwood Hand were joined in 1978 by Daniel Nelson. In 1981, Dan became a partner and the firm was renamed Severson, Hand & Nelson, P.A. In the fall of 2002, Stephen Nelson moved back to Houlton from Portland to join the firm. Steve became a partner in 2005. In 2018, Steve was appointed as a District Court Judge.
Lynwood passed away in May of 2007. Gary and Dan continue to operate the busy firm. Although the firm has a wide practice range, Gary concentrates his practice on estate planning, probate and trust administration and corporate law. Dan focuses his practice on real estate, municipal representation, civil litigation, and family matters. Dan is now offering private divorce and family matter mediation services.
